I received a notice from another hoodoo reader yesterday announcing that her readings were going up to $150.00. Hmmm, it made me wonder.

You see, I have a philosophy that you get out of something what you pay for. My daughter, who believes that only going straight from high school to the California University system is the only recognizable way to get a job anywhere, is sadly mistaken. You see, many general education courses are offered by our junior college system which have various sites around the city, and whose credits are accepted by the University transfer system when the time comes to focus of the fine points of your degree. My analogy is that you can get broccoli beef from any of the fine Chinese restaurants in the area, or you can go to the very overpriced place in downtown, dining while watching the endless streams of cars heading home to the suburbs and breathing the exhaust while thinking you look so very chic in view of those stopped at the red lights. Some may envy you; most won’t care.

Delving deeper, the very same produce company provides the broccoli to each restaurant and the recipe is basically the same ingredients; maybe with a little different proportion or an added spice to one, but basically in its core substance the same thing. Your ‘ambiance’ (or maybe ‘rent’) is all that really matters when pricing. Another analogy I use for clients is that your Grandma and mine baked chocolate cake from scratch. Yours might have put in mayonnaise to substitute for eggs, mine may have put three teaspoons of vanilla. Are they both chocolate cake? Yes of course, but each has had the core ingredients (flour, cocoa, eggs, sugar, milk, oil or butter) “tweaked” to suit each cook.

My point is that many hoodoo practitioners come from the same ‘tree’, or taught by some of the big wig teachers in hoodoo, and traditional beliefs do not stray far from each other. Unless that other hoodoo practitioner does something for you that others can’t, why pay the higher price?

Ahhh…it is in the advertising and the ‘feeling’ of high class and ambiance. Like the emotional ‘high’ you get owning a Coach, Louis Vuitton or Juicy Couture bag, right? Hmmm. My ego does not need that type of stroking to the tune of hundreds of dollars on my arm. I do not need to have people look at me with envy (now you see where the ole’ stink eye evil jealous thing comes from that you get a full-tilt whammy of it when your friend wants what you have and you need help).

Seek out a no-nonsense reader who gets to the point and can work with you without leaving you with less.
