As a child attending Catholic school, each May was a special month in which the entire school and staff would assemble on the grassy swath of lawn before an outdoor altar that was constructed for a ceremony to honor Mary, the Mother of Jesus. This event was held the week before Mother’s Day to remind all to recognize that the Virgin Mary was the Mother of us all. The air held the fresh chill of Spring and the Sun would warm the crowd as each class would arrive and sit in folding chairs in rows. Many housewives, mothers themselves of children attending the school, would arrange the donated roses from all the gardens of the area in one fragrant and beautiful space that would be the template for my own altar constructions later in my life.

Mother’s Day is on May 8th this year and honoring them is tradition in many cultures. Some give silent witness of whether their mother is still on Earth or not by wearing either a pink, red, or white rose (or sometimes carnations) corsage while attending religious and other ceremonial celebrations. Many choose the whole weekend to visit the cemetery to lay flowers for the grandmothers and mothers in their plots. Some bring candles, and in area of the country where there is a heavy Southwest influence, sweets, alcohol, and other items would be placed near the headstones. Mariachi bands linger nearby under the shade trees in the event families would want a song played for Mama.
